Gun Safety

It’s Time for Common-Sense Gun Reform

Gun violence has become an everyday tragedy in the United States. In 2023 alone, over 48,000 Americans lost their lives to firearms—whether by homicide, suicide, mass shootings, or accidental discharge. Gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children and teens in our country, surpassing car accidents. This is not normal, and it is not acceptable.

While our nation mourns mass shootings in schools, grocery stores, churches, and concerts, Congress continues to delay and deflect. But the American people have had enough—and they overwhelmingly support action.

  • 88% of Americans support universal background checks.

  • 75% support “red flag” laws to remove guns from dangerous individuals.

  • 61% support a ban on assault weapons.

Despite this overwhelming consensus, a small group of lawmakers—beholden to the gun lobby—continue to block basic, common-sense reforms. They’ll tell you we must choose between public safety and the Second Amendment. That’s a false choice. We can—and must—do both.

Here’s what I Support

  1. Universal Background Checks

    • Every gun sale—whether it’s through a dealer, online, or at a gun show—should require a background check. No loopholes. No exceptions.

  2. Ban Assault Weapons & High-Capacity Magazines

    • Weapons designed for war have no place in our neighborhoods or schools. We need to reinstate a federal ban on assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines that exist for one purpose: to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.

  3. Red Flag Laws

    • Allowing courts to temporarily remove guns from individuals who pose a danger to themselves or others can prevent mass shootings and save lives. States that have implemented red flag laws have already seen success.

  4. Gun Licensing & Waiting Periods

    • Just like a driver’s license, gun ownership should require training, vetting, and a waiting period. A national licensing system would prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands.

  5. End Legal Immunity for Gun Manufacturers

    • Gun makers are the only industry in America protected from lawsuits when their products cause mass death. That must change. If they profit off dangerous weapons, they should be held accountable for their consequences.

  6. Invest in Mental Health and Community Safety

    • This crisis isn’t solved by policing alone. We must fund community-based violence intervention programs and expand access to mental health care—without scapegoating those with mental illness.

Every day we delay, more lives are lost. Gun violence is not inevitable. It’s a policy choice—and we have the power to choose differently. I will always stand on the side of kids, families, and communities over gun lobbyists and weapons manufacturers.

It’s time to stop the cycle of violence, and start protecting the people we were elected to serve.
